Customer Review :

Amazing for such a low priced tablet! : Le Pan TC 970 9.7-Inch Multi-Touch LCD Google Android Tablet PC

The Le Pan TC970 is an excellent Android tablet, I am honestly thrilled with it. It's extremely responsive, never once did I have an issue with it slowing down no matter how many other things were going on. I'm thoroughly enjoying the TC970, and I think you will as well.

Aesthetically the TC970 is very pleasing and stylish looking, it's also thin and lightweight. The build quality is excellent, it's a solidly made tablet on par with those much more expensive.

I've had the pleasure of testing both the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I have to say I like the Le Pan TC970 much better overall. The TC970 doesn't have a Tegra in it but from what I've seen it doesn't need it, it's more than capable a handling anything you can throw at it in terms of apps, games or videos or anything else. I was truly surprised that the 1Ghz CPU could handle everything I threw at it.

The most surprising or actually amazing thing is the battery life, no joke here I got over eight hours use while doing a mixture of playing games and browsing the web. I even left I on just sitting and overnight and still had battery left to use it.

The TC970 isn't without its problems though, but they're small and not deal breakers. I don't care for the Apple-like USB connection at all, I would have rather seen a standard micro-USB or even mini-USB connector. The screen is very glossy causing reflections in the correct light and after a few hours of use you'll find the accumulated fingerprints very annoying.

The built-in memory is rather small, yes you can put a larger microSD card in it but I would also like to see more built-in memory.

The build quality is excellent, but the back is rather slippery honestly, I would have liked it to be more rubberized of textured for a better grip.

The other small issue the limited video support, it can't play basic WMV or Divx files.

Yes it's running Android 2.2, some people might think that's old and ask why not Gingerbread or Honeycomb. I thought the same thing so I asked them and they told me to expect an update last quarter of 2011 with Ice Cream Sandwich, they told me they decided to skip Gingerbread and Honeycomb and wait until the next major Android release.

The camera shows things mirrored or backwards, a major update is supposed to be released any day now to fix it. I got no real explanation as to why the camera was that way in the first place though.

The pros and cons are listed below and it might look like a lot of cons but they're small, and not exactly bad things really.

Lastly I should mention the price, it's very low for a tablet of this caliber and quality. It's nice to see something this nice at a low price.

Pros:
+Amazing battery life
+Very responsive touch screen
+Does work in bright light
+Fast and responsive overall
+Low price compared to other tablets
+Simple to use
+Excellent design and construction
+Aesthetically pleasing
+Viewing from most any angle

Cons:
-Proprietary connector
-Screen attracts fingerprints
-Glossy screen
-Small built-in memory
-Back is rather slippery
-Can't use in direct sunlight
-Limited video formats
-Camera is backwards

Customer Review :

Great iPod, great upgrade, but you might not want to throw away you 5th Gen Ipod yet... : Apple iPod classic 160 GB Silver (7th Generation) NEWEST MODEL

This is the second iPod I own. The first one was a 30 Mb 5th Generation Ipod Video.

First, the plus.

There are many improvements in the 7th generation comparing it to the 5th, although I think most of them were introduced with the 6th Gen. The whole Cover Flow/Genius capabilities are definetly an improvement to the previous software. The games are a nice bonus. I've only had it for three days, but I can already see that I like the new interface a lot more.

And the disk space, I mean, WOW! The ipod is basically the same size as my 30 Gb one, but it's capacity is over 5 times bigger. I am an avid music fan, have tons of music, and my musical taste ranges from ambient to heavy metal, but I think it's going to be a long time before I fill this one up. I think this is the best feature of this iPod, and by itself, the reason you should buy it.

There are also video capabilities, which have always been a plus, and some other stuff, but I didn't see a major difference from the previous versions.

But then, why did I give it 4 stars? I wanted 4.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't let me do that.

Here are the cons.

First, as previous reviewers have stated, the sound quality seems to have downgraded from the 5th Gen iPod. The sound lacks depth, the songs sound more flat. I don't mean to say that the sound is bad, because it still has a very good sound, and I've tested it with headphones, computer speakers and my car stereo. I'm just saying that the 5th Generation iPod sounds better, and the difference is quite noticeable.

The other thing, which might be just my iPod, because I didn't see other reviewers mentioning it, is that the click wheel seems to be less sensitive/responsive than the 5th Generation one. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is annoying sometimes that you try so select a song or an option on the menu and the wheel doesn't respond right away.

There's also the fact that using Cover Flow seems to make the iPod proccess slower, but then again, loading the covers of literally thousands of records is not a quick task, and you can always not use Cover Flow, so I won't hold this against the iPod.

To sum it all up. If you have a lot of music and want to carry it all with you; if 30, 60, 80 or 120 Gb is just not enough; if this is your first iPod purchase, or if you just really, really like the new interface and games (I know I did), then I highly reccomend it, and you won't be dissapointed. To me this is definetly the best music player on the market. You will need to sit down and learn how to use iTunes, but when you do, you're just going to love this little gadget.

However, if you have a 5th generation iPod that's working just fine, and you prefer sound quality to disk space, you might not want to buy this one. Just try to be more more picky with the songs you put on it, I guess.

Customer Review :

The geeks are going to freak! : Le Pan II 9.7-Inch Tablet (Black)

A note about the previous reviews: Half of you don't even own the product that you are reviewing, how sad. The other half are reviewing last years model, the Le Pan TC970. Please, the internet has enough garbage on it already.

The review: I pre-ordered my Lepan II at the $250 price point and received it yesterday. This device is an absolute steal at $250, even at $299. I have one of the earliest Android tablets, the nVidia Tegra 2 based Viewsonic gTablet(BTW, the best ROM for this is Beastie with Clemsyn's Kernel). I also have an iPad 2 that my wife uses. I was looking for a new tablet to replace my gTablet . I liked the form factor of my wife's iPad 2 but nothing on the market had that except for the now defunct HP Touchpad. I wasn't prepared to shell out another 500+ dollars for another iPad in addition, I don't like the "yellow brick road" nature of the iDevices. When I saw the Lepan II I immediately jumped on it. IMHO this is the closest Android device to the iPad thus far. It's based on a similar cortex A8 platform as the iPad and it has the same 4:3 aspect ratio.

The Lepan II came in a nice box, nicely packaged. As I took it out of the box, I was impressed right away with how thin it was. The device itself is housed in an aluminum chassis with chrome accents on the sides. The Lepan II feels really good in the hand, it has a nice heft to it and feels an looks much more expensive than what it's price would suggest. This is one good looking tablet.

From power-on to boot was faster than my gTablet, on par with the iPad 2. It boots to Honeycomb 3.2.1. The screen is AMAZING at this price point. It's nice and bright. The viewing angles are excellent! I am very impressed. The first thing I did was install a sys info app to find out what exactly was inside this thing. I couldn't find any info on the net. Le Pan's site does not tell you much other than saying that it's a dual-core 1.2 gigahertz cpu.

So what's inside??

It's a Dual Core Snapdragon MSM8660 clocked at 1.2 GHZ with an Adreno 220 GPU! This thing beats the brakes off the Tegra 2's. When rooted it should be able to overclock to 1.5 GHZ from what I can tell. The 1.2 GHZ MSM8660 is identical to the 1.5 except for the underclock, which might be done for better battery life numbers. I am so tweaked!

I'll update my review when I've spent more time with my LePan.

Update:

Hi all. There is an update available for the Le Pan. I can't tell you what's new since those details weren't published, but it did fix some force close issues I was having with the YouTube app. Also, I noticed that the option for HDMI out went missing. Here's a tip to save you some frustration before you do the update. Go to settings, then applications, then development and enable the "stay awake" option while charging. The download takes a long time and if your device goes to sleep it will freeze and you'll have to start over again.

Did you know that the parent company of Le Pan is Matsunichi? Le Pan is the marketing name for the tablet and it means "the pan", I know corny right? I suppose the idea doesn't translate as well from Chinese. If you go to Matsunichi's site, the same tablet is being marketed as the "Meridian TC977". I don't know about you but I kind of like "Le Pan" better.

This from the company's web site: "Matsunichi was established in Hong Kong in 1993 which specializes in R & D, manufacture and sales of digital consumer electronics and IT products (including but not limited to AV products, gaming products, netbook and accessories) with OEM and ODM capabilities.
Matsunichi is a member of the Goldin Group. The Goldin Group is a Hong Kong based conglomerate and its members include Goldin Properties Holdings Limited (stock code: 0283) and Goldin Financial Holdings Limited (stock code: 0530) which are companies listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Through continuous innovation and expansion, Matsunichi has grown into a multi-national corporation with a solid base in greater China, subsidiaries located in the P.R.C. and the United States. The success of Matsunichi is attributed greatly to its strong relationships with suppliers and business partners, active R& D, efficient resources management, brand positioning and marketing strategy."

Just a little info for those that are uncomfortable with an unknown commodity.

The Tablet:

I would like to discuss the features specific to the Le Pan and not rehash information that is already out there concerning Android Honeycomb. If you would like to know the relative performance of this tablet vs other android devices. Google Adreno 220 vs Tegra 2. Since the majority of the Andoid tablets are based on Tegra I think that's a good place to start. You will also find reviews pitting Adreno 220 vs the iPad.

GPS:

The latest version of Google Maps has voice activated turn by turn navigation. It also has the ability to by default download and cache 10 mile radius of map data.

The test: I wanted to be able to find stuff even when I was not connected to a network. So I pre-cached about a 100 mile radius which represents the entire metro area including all of the suburbs where I live. It only consumed about 100MB. Pretty cool, eh? While sitting in my living room, I launched Google Maps. Maps immediately located my current location within about 40 feet. I entered a destination address in Google Maps and touched the driving directions icon. Maps plotted a course. I jumped in my car, mounted the Le Pan and went driving. It worked perfectly, just like my Garmin. When I arrived at my destination I was able to later plot another destination all without being tethered to a network.

E-Compass:

I also used the Compass app and was amazed at how accurate it was. The Le Pan somehow syncs with the satellites much faster than my Garmin.

Wifi:

Wifi works as expected. I have a wireless N network at home that is WPA2 encrypted. The Le Pan connected flawlessly. I've connected in shops, at work, in restaurants with no issue.

Bluetooth:

I have a Logitech Dinovo Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that I don't use much since going with a 2.4 GHz nano based combo. I activated Bluetooth on the Le Pan, set the keyboard and mouse to be found, entered the appropriate passkeys and voila! Keyboard and mouse enabled tablet. I typed this review using my keyboard and mouse with the QuickOffice HD app. No issues.

Connectivity:

The Le Pan comes with a proprietary 30 pin connector. I was told that this connector was pin compatible with the connectors for the iPad. Sure enough I used one of my wife's iPad 2 connectors for charging and it worked just fine. I am ordering one of those all in one connectors that allows for USB, HDMI and power. We'll see how it goes but so far so good.

Screen:

The screen is nice and bright but it does suffer from some light bleeding on the edges. It bothered me at first but now I don't notice it.

Camera:

I used Skype to chat with my brother. The camera worked well. The picture gets a little grainy if your lighting is bad but it works well otherwise.

Root:

The only thing that bothers me so far is that I don't have root. I contacted Le Pan for the drivers but they said that they are not releasing them to end-users. Root is important. There are many things you can't do without it. For instance I want to enable Samba shares for the convenience of copying data back and forth from my computer without using the USB cable. No can do without root. I don't trust app developers. I want to be able to see what they are doing on my device. Every app you install wants to launch itself at startup, which effects performance, then there's the ads choking my bandwidth. I can go on, but you get the idea. I went for Android for the freedom to fully use my device. To tweak it the way I see fit. Not to be locked down. I hope someone finds a way to do this soon.

I am still feeling really good about my tablet. People will inevitably compare this tablet to Apple's, but I don't believe Apple has anything to worry about. People that buy Apple will buy Apple no matter what. However, anyone in the market for an Android tablet is loathe not to SERIOUSLY consider this one. Just do a search for tablets on Amazon's site and you'll find that even the discontinued HP Touchpad is going for over $300.
